Holt family cousin Lisa Arnett, Coastal Region Administrative Coordinator will host our first stop. We’ll learn about programs to educate black farmers, provide economic development support, and provide services to underserved communities in the region. Our local tour guide will join us there.

Fields Farm, Johns Island, SC

Located 10 minutes from downtown, Johns Island is one of the coastal islands that has been home to Gullah people for centuries.

At Fields Farm, we’ll meet Jim and Helen Fields.  A family farm since the 1800s. This 50-acre farm and market is acclaimed for its fresh organic fruits and vegetables. They run educational workshops for farmers and host a variety of community events. Jim is also an advocate concerned about the impact of gentrification, development, and climate change on the Gullah Geechee islands.

·         Learn the story of the Gullah Geechee people on Johns Island and their biggest concerns.

·         Take a tractor-trailer ride to see the farm.

·         Pick some fruit and vegetables.

·         Shop in the market.

·         Enjoy a delicious and hearty lunch of shrimp & grits, fish, ribs, fried chicken, Gullah red rice, mac & cheese, and a variety of freshly cooked organic vegetables, watermelon, etc.

Tour

Our tour guide will make sure we see key historic spots, including the Angel Tree, Mother Emanuel AME Church, etc.

International African American Museum

The  International African American Museum is located on Gadsden’s Wharf, a sacred site where an estimated 40% of African captives entered this country.

The exhibitions tell the dynamic story of the international African American experience. Even if you’ve already been to other African American history museums, this one is like no other! For those interested in genealogy, the Center for Family History offers resources, digital archives, and online educational events.

The bus will get us back to the museum by 2 pm. NOTE: Tickets to the International African American Museum are not included in the price of your excursion ticket as those tickets do not go on sale until May, prices are based on age and military status.

Plan to buy your tickets directly on the museum website. Select the 2 pm entry time or no later than 4 pm.

Explore Charleston

After the museum, you'll find other things to do downtown before we leave. The bus will depart from Charleston City Market so meet us there by 5:45 pm for a prompt 6 pm departure.

  • Charleston Water Taxi is a great way to relax and enjoy a scenic harbor boat ride with views of the new Ravenel Bridge, while dolphins and pelicans feed alongside the boat. The water taxi runs on a continuous loop around Charleston Harbor and stops at Patriots Point, the location of the USS Yorktown (aircraft carrier).
  • Charleston Aquarium is also located on the wharf. Tickets can be purchased on their website.
  • King Street where you'll find everything from high-end boutiques to local art galleries, restaurants, and more.
  • Charleston City Market.  #1 Most visited attraction.  Historic 4-block  covered open-air market with something for everyone! One of my favorites is the vendors selling colorful Gullah artwork.
