Alice Jay & George Allen

 

Alice was the second of three sisters born to Bridget and Mack Jay. She married George Allen whose people were believed to have been enslaved by John G. Allen. He had a modest-sized farm with 12 slaves listed on the 1850 census.

 

Alice and George owned a farm on a large tract of land. 

 

Alice died sometime in the early 1920’s. George was said to be a fun, outgoing person. He eventually left SC and moved to Washington, DC where he worked for the Daily Times newspaper and lived with family members.

 

Children:  James Allen, Luther Allen (Laura Vaughn), Bridgette (George Evans), Julia (Hamp Wilson), George Allen, and Clinton Allen. 

 

James Allen & Mary Wilson

James Allen is the oldest child of Alice and George Allen. He was 21 when he married 18-year-old Mary Wilson, daughter of Rhoda Oliphant (1866-1951) and Edward Wilson (1864-1943).

 

His daughter Elizabeth Roberts recalls her father as the quiet, hard-working type and her mother as the talker. The children attended the local Seventh Day Adventist Church with their mother. James worked as a plumber's helper and other jobs in the construction industry.

 

James and Mary had eleven children, the ones listed below are the ones that survived beyond early childhood. The family relocated to Washington, D.C. in the 1920s. 

 

Children: Mack Allen, Alice Fryer, John Allen, Elizabeth Roberts White, Hilda Jackson, Jean Gillis, Fred Allen.

 

Mack Allen (1913-1998)
Mack along with sister Alice and brothers John and Fred were born in SC. His other siblings were born in Washington, DC. Mack had two daughters, Maxine Allen and Dorothea Mack-Houston. 

 


Alice Allen Fryer (1915-1979)
Alice was married to Thomas Fryer. Their children included Lavern, Larry, and Cecil. 


John Allen
John resided lived in Washington, DC.

 

Elizabeth Allen
Born in 1925. Elizabeth retired from the US State Department's Agency for International Development. Elizabeth and Stanley Roberts had five children: Marcia Jones, Stanley Bruce Roberts, Patricia, Everett Allen Roberts, and Charlene Roberts. She later remarried Bob White.

 

Hilda Jackson (1930-2009)
Hilda was a beautiful and loving person who was devoted to her family. She enjoyed researching and sharing family history. Hilda was a former officer of the Daniel-Jay DC Chapter. She retired from the federal government after 37 years. She then worked as a social worker and later with the National Older Workers Career Center and Environmental Protection Agency. Her spirit and strong faith sustained her during her illness.


Hilda and James Jackson Sr had three children: Germaine Frye, James Jr, and Allen Jackson Sr.

 

Jean Gillis
Jean retired from the US General Services Administration in Washington, DC. Jean and Donald 
J.Gillis, Sr had 3 children: Yvette, Nashana, and Donald J Gillis, Jr


 

Fred Allen Sr.
Fred has been an active supporter of the Daniel-Jay D.C. Chapter. Fred as well as his sister Elizabeth retired from the Agency for International Development.

Fred and Anna Kalm had two sons Fred Jr and Josef Allen. 

Bridgette Allen & George Evans

 

Bridgette married George Evans and had four children: Robert, George Jr, Luther, and Alice 
(Mayflower).

 

Julia Allen (1890-?)  & Hamp Wilson (1892-1962)

 

Julia Allen was born on her parents' farm.  The 1910 census listed Julia and Willie "Hamp" Wilson living in the former Township 7, Saluda, SC.

 

Hamp’s brother Milledge Wilson Jr. married Julia’s cousin Emma Daniel (daughter of Savannah & Lawrence Daniel.)

 

Julia and Hamp had 12 children, including baby Alice who died at an early age. All of the children grew up on the farm. They raised cotton, corn, white and sweet potatoes, peanuts, watermelons, and various fruit trees. 

 

They were members of Mt. Calvary Baptist Church. Hamp served as head of the Deacon Board for many years and Julia was church mother. Julia was known as a very sweet person. She had a stroke when she was in her 40s and never fully regained her strength. She died in the mid-1950s. Hamp later married his wife's cousin Sophia Hurley following the death of her husband Romulus Hurley.

 

 Hamp was described by one of his granddaughters as a serious and stern person with dark skin and black silky hair. She said he looked like “an Old Indian Man”. Hamp’s mother, Sallie Doe was said to be a full-blooded Cherokee Indian.

 

 

Children: James Wilson, Alice Wilson, Sallie Andrews, Beulah Walker, Margaret Gordon, George Samuel, Willie Wilson, Edna Gordon, Maude Hausch, Raymond Wilson, Ida Blackshear, and Marian Mackey.

 

James Wilson 1910- 1976
James (known as Jimmy) married Maude Weaver. James was a farmer most of his life, but later worked at Union Pacific in Edgefield SC. They had eight children: Julia Butler,
Grace Lee, Willie James Wilson, Marjorie Jackson, Barbara Raiford, and Maude Harris, Clarence Melvin Wilson, and Gail Jenkins. 

 

Sallie Wilson Andrews (1915-1991)
Sallie married Rufus Andrews and had four girls and one boy. Daughter Margaret Hamilton re- sides in Johnston and still attends Mine Creek Baptist Church. 

 

Beulah Wilson (1916 -2009)
Beulah married Edward Walker and had one son Eriskin Walker. She lived in the Washington, DC area.

 

Margaret Wilson Gordon
Margaret was married to Raiford Gordon and had five children.

 

Georgia Wilson b. 1921
Georgia married Raymond Samuel. Georgia had three girls and two boys. Her son Aaron Holloway and his wife Dale were active members of the Daniel-Jay DC Chapter.


 Maude Vivian Wilson Housh
Maude is one of the last surviving children of Julia and Hamp Wilson. Maude attended 
Bettis Junior College after which she taught at the Lockhart School before moving North. She is a graduate of Allen University in Columbia, SC.

Maude and her husband Julius Housch settled in Detroit and raised sons, Randy and Marvin, and daughter, Sandra Sneed.

 

Ida Blackshear
Ida and Joseph Blackshear had three girls and two boys. Ida had been in poor health for many years and was finally called home in June 2010.


 Marian Mackey (1941-1995)
Marian was the youngest child of Julia and Hamp Wilson. She and Alonzo Mackey had one
daughter Qubulah Mackey-Matos. She is married to Tony and has a son, Quentin.
